About the Event

"Journey through the Wilderness of Song" is a program of art songs designed to mirror the human experience of cycling between periods of chaos and calm and disorder and order. The ensemble features Sangeetha Ekambaram (soprano), Bakara Nkenge-Hinds (soprano), John Logan Wood (tenor), and Alessandra Volpi Jenson (piano), who feel this program is a timely offering given the state of the world over the past several months. Journey through themes of life and death, the angst of separation, the joy of connection, the splendor of nature, and dreams of hope. The program presents a rich and diverse soundscape in music ranging from the 16th century to contemporary times.

Italian Pianist Alessandra Volpi is an avid chamber musician and collaborator, who loves finding ways to bring classical music to a broader and diverse audience. She has played with numerous orchestras nationally and internationally and has earned top prizes and various competitions in both Europe and the United States.  She began her piano studies at the age of four and has earned degrees from the Milan and Florence Conservatory, Utah State University and completed internships with Liszt Academy Faculty members in Budapest, Hungary. Ms. Volpi currently holds the position of Collaborative Pianist at Belmont University and Rehearsal Pianist for the Nashville Ballet for which she has appeared in many of their productions and premiers.

Soprano Sangeetha Ekambaram has been enthusiastically received by audiences across the United States and Europe both in opera and on the concert stage. In addition, she finds a musical home wherever she travels and thrives on creative collaborations with other artists, even across musical genres. She is excited to collaborate on “Journey through the Wilderness of Song” and considers this project to be a timely heart offering of love and hope in the midst of life’s turbulence. Soprano Bakara Nkenge‐Hinds’ rich timbre and natural expression allow for meaningful communication and storytelling in her performances. Based in Nashville, she is passionate about teaching all genres of music, but has an affinity for contemporary classical art song. Her intention for “Journey through the Wilderness of Song” is to share some of her favorite music with the audience and revel in the beauty of music making after such an unprecedented year.  In addition to her private studio, she is also an adjunct professor of voice and music theory at Trevecca Nazarene University and Belmont University, respectively. Originally from Durham, NC, she received a BM in music education from Michigan State University and a MM in vocal pedagogy from Belmont University.

Nashville-based tenor, John Logan Wood has been actively engaged in several local companies as a soloist and ensemble member. He performed the tenor solo for Carmina Burana (Orff) in Nashville as well as at Smetana Hall in Prague, Czech Republic with Nashville Symphony and Nashville Ballet under the direction of Tucker Biddlecomb and Michael Hanawalt. He has sung for several productions in Nashville Opera Chorus and is a staff singer at St. George’s Episcopal Church. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he continued to record beautiful choral music. He performed in a world premiere of Mark Volker’s “After The Plague: The Body and Soul Debate” with Nashville based ensemble Chatterbird as well as in a film adaptation of Kurt Weill’s “Die Sieben Todsünden” with Nashville Based soprano and performance artist Rebekah Alexander. For Mr. Wood, “Journey Through the Wilderness of Song” is a refreshing opportunity to share some of the most beautiful songs that were a personal tonic during the pandemic.
